Global WARN ing
What in the world is going on with our climate? Some are of the opinion that there is actually nothing wrong, holding to the notion that historical and normal weather patterns easily explain any anomalies. Others acknowledge that while climate certainly does fluctuate over time, they point to the uncharacteristically rapid changes of this last century that tend to distort any historical pattern. This idea is centered on the notion that the world average temperature may need to be tightly regulated over longer time frames in order for living systems to adapt. This appears to be the reason why the scientific community’s majority opinion is that we are in an emergency. Their consensus is that the one and one half degree temperature rise over the last century may be way too rapid, citing evidence that six of the nine planetary boundaries that living organisms depend upon are already compromised. Historically, global average temperature changes caused by entirely natural cycles have taken thousands of years or more, which have allowed life to adapt slowly, and almost imperceptibly.
Society in general, of course, has a tendency to ignore such seemingly small temperature changes simply because we experience local daily outdoor temperature swings of perhaps fifty degrees. Just maybe it would be useful to pause for a moment however, and think of the earth as a possible living organism like the human body, and then a different perspective will emerge. The body is perfectly regulated at 98.6 degrees, and an increase of one degree is considered a fever while a three degree increase can lead to death. According to that metric, our earth is already enduring a fever. Humanity may be learning in real time that the earth itself actually is very much like the human body and also requires an overall tightly regulated temperature for optimum health. Shockingly, science is strongly suggesting that an unusual four degrees increase can lead to death of the living planet, as well as the human body.
So what is the bottom line?
Humanity as a whole is, to put it simply, a heat engine. The living arrangement of the average person results in heat being added to the atmosphere way beyond any amount contributed by animals. We cook food, they do not. We heat our homes, they do not. We fly planes, drive trucks, ships, cars, and industrialize, but animals do not. And while we overpopulate a finite planet with our kind, we constantly steal land, water and other resources from all other life forms, those we actually depend on to survive. This is the reality.
Since society seems to lack compelling incentives to alter its historical way of life, the result is just more talk and more study, but no real action. This is not new, since international risk managers have long been aware that action should have been taken in the last century. It is imperative to firmly grasp this basic truth; that no nation is going to risk its economic system to take meaningful voluntary sustained action on the climate since they view the economy as top priority. What would it take to incentivize people, business and governments to act? Will the natural world have to rebel with even more dire consequences that kill millions? As it turns out, if our industrialized society is left to its own devices, it may continue to act as the virus that will assuredly kill its host, and thus quite literally, itself. Are we really that dumb?
So unless an unseen hand from somewhere is able to compel a cessation of this human madness, all life on earth may well be doomed to the sixth and final extinction, already in progress. “The extinction crisis is so vast and complex that it almost repels thought.” The Guardian, 2014. Religious leaders and the myriad of religions are no help either, since they seem to ignore the science and their Bible as they go about their work of supposed salvation.
A mechanism was set in motion long ago by which mankind could bring about his own demise if he ignored the inexorable laws that govern the earth and its delicately balanced environmental boundaries. The natural laws of the earth’s systems can bring an end to man’s immoral acts against the natural world, since nature is tuned to automatically correct any imbalance, yet the process unfolds over decades and does not happen overnight. Is this what is happening now?
Somewhere in virtually every home in America rests a copy of the bestselling book of all time, the Bible. Many people never open it, since the perception is that it is a book that requires professional interpretation.
Since professional interpreters have brought us 4200 different religions, logic would suggest that interpretation has led only to utter confusion.
I believe that this long misinterpreted book has hidden within its pages clear and concise wisdom that addresses every question we may ask. When it comes to the climate dilemma, a person may only need to be aware of passages from one of its minor books, the Book of Job (chapter 38) where the man Job is being asked a rather strange question: “Have you entered the treasures of snow---which I have reserved against the time of trouble, against the time of battle and war?”
This ancient man, Job, had no answer since he had not seen these treasures, but today we have. They are the vast ice reserves of Greenland, the Arctic, and Antarctic and of glaciers that are layer upon layer of accumulated snowfall, compacted into vast stores of ice. The majority of this ice has been held in reserve for thousands of years. It has, however, been in decline over the last century, melting far faster today than any scientist had believed was even possible. This is apparently causing unusual changes to the environment on every continent of the world. The probability is articulated by the scientist Paul Beckwith of Ottawa, Canada when he writes “What happens in the Arctic does not stay in the Arctic."
Unless some unknown processes are discovered quickly and brought to scale, all life on earth may be at risk, so we humans certainly seem to have unleashed on our earth a time of battle and war as described in the ancient book of Job. There are solutions, but the solutions we offer appear to be just more crazy investment schemes that could bring with them negative impacts that far exceed any gains.
Completely natural processes provided the incredible biodiversity that the first humans laid their eyes on. For example, giant California redwoods came to America long before Columbus, yet in just a few short years the amazing work of these trees was quickly diminished by the workman’s axe.
Gathered into a natural forest, these wonders can contribute to climate stability for a thousand years, yet require no costly maintenance or rebuilding programs. They create their own weather system and are entirely self sustaining by replicating themselves free of charge. I am not aware of any human contrivance that could possibly perform even one of those remarkable feats.
So would it be wise to go to a war footing and start replanting trees everywhere? First of all, tree planting is mostly off the table because major politically connected corporate interests hope to invent some lucrative and endless money making scheme to replace the work done by trees, so planting is not a priority. Secondly, tree planting is perhaps a hundred years too late to be of any immediate help and would almost certainly take place in all the wrong places. Nature planted trees where they belong, but we in out infinite wisdom cut most of them down and replaced them with urban sprawl and shopping malls.
The hard truth seems to be that the science of business and politics got us into this mess, so it is not likely to find a cheap sustainable way to get us out. However, I am of the opinion that the natural world is set to save itself partly through the melting of the “treasures of snow” described in the remarkable book of Job. In this fully automated response of nature to human mismanagement and neglect, the crisis will be solved as world population declines dramatically from ever more deadly climate induced disasters. The exception is if we nuke ourselves first, and this extinction event could happen quickly, like overnight.
This website is dedicated to both those who believe the Bible may be relevant to modern life, and those who may not. Many who express belief in the bible also hold the notion of subduing the natural world, yet many scientists who may not believe, subscribe to the more noble notion, to “Dress and Keep” nature.Gathered into a natural forest, these wonders can contribute to climate stability for a thousand years, yet require no costly maintenance or rebuilding programs.
